The Test of Obedience (1)
“Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham…” Gen 22:1 NIV
As students or professionals, we are all familiar with what a test is. After you’ve acquired knowledge or experience in a certain field, an examination of your knowledge or a test will be carried out to ascertain the level of your training. “Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”” Gen 22:2 NIV. God having been training Abraham, wanted to show how far Abraham has performed. God already knew what the outcome would be, He still has to carry out the test so that you and me can learn from it.
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.” Mk 12:30. When God created man, he put everything He created under man’s authority, Gen 1:26-39. God does not expect man to be under the authority of any of His creations; man should be under the authority of God alone. God’s test to Abraham was a test of loyalty to Him who is all in all.
God’s test to Abraham was a test of obedience from the One who gave him all things freely to enjoy, and to return the glory to Him alone. Many people are still like babies when it comes to loyalty to God. Give a baby some cookies, then try to take some of the cookies for yourself, and the baby will start crying and throwing tantrums. “…What do you have that you did not receive?…” 1 Cor 4:7 NIV. All good things in our lives are from God our Father. “…A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.” Jn 3:27 NKJV. We must love God beyond His gifts in our lives; we must love Him with all our hearts and possessions.
Prayer
1. My Father my God, let me not fail the test of your love in my life.
2. O God my Father, help me to love you with all my heart and possessions.
3. Father God, make me excel in my walk with you.
