The rich fool

And I will say to my soul, Soul, …take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” Lk 12:19

The parable of the rich fool (Lk 12:16-21) is a clear example of a man whose heart was clearly in his treasure. While it is certainly not a sin for one to have abundance, one must certainly not set one’s heart to it. The man said, “And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” vv 19. There was certainly no God in the plan of the man.

Just before the parable, “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” vv 15. God is not against us having wealth, but He doesn’t want us to be enslaved to them. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper…” 3Jn 2. Use your wealth to serve God, the Gospel and humanity. This is the reason God gave wealth to you.
