Revelation of God
“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:5-6
“I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear:” Job had heard of God before: from oral traditions of the forefathers, and from the teachings of the rabbis. However this is nothing compared to having first hand knowledge and revelation of God, from God Himself. Like Paul the apostle, we need the Holy Spirit to reveal to us who God is, and His salvation through His Holy Son, Jesus Christ (Ga 1:16).
‘But now mine eye seeth thee.’ This does not mean that Job did actually saw God, but he now have a better understanding as if he literarily saw God. Job received revelation from God. No mortal man can see God and live (Ex 33:20). Job heard God from the whirlwind. “Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,” Job 38:1
‘Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent…‘ Before this, Job was vocal of his own righteousness and put up rigorous defenses for himself. But now, he would no longer speak in his own excuse; he abhorred himself as a sinner in heart and life, especially for his several complaints and self righteousness. God’s revelation to job changed him and his narratives.
We are to deeply humble ourselves for our sins. “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Jas 4:6. True repentance starts with humility before God. Like Job, let us repent of all our sins and self righteousness. “Our Father and God, we pray, give us the heart of true humility and repentance, in Jesus name. Amen”
