Psalm 23: Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” Ps 23:6
Surely goodness and mercy… David has experienced the goodness and mercy of God, and so he made bold to say that he will continue to experience such as long as he lives. God is ready to bless His people, if only they will seek Him genuinely, Je 29:11-14.
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord. This expresses a constant longing for God. “For a day in thy courts [is] better than a thousand…” Ps 84:10. Are you hungry or thirsty for the presence of God like David? ”As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.
My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” Ps 42:1-2.
“One [thing] have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.” Ps 27:4-5
The house of the Lord refers to His Temple. A lot of people take it for granted and will not attend church services. David, in his days running and hiding from Saul, knew what it is to miss the temple services. “Blessed [are] they that dwell in thy house: they will be still praising thee. Selah.” Ps 84:4.
Prayer
O God my Father, fill my heart with hunger and thirst for your house.
