Divorce: A Permissive Permission
“He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.” Mt 19:8
While people were busy receiving their miracles from Jesus Christ, and many also learning about God’s Kingdom from him, the religious leaders of his time were busy cooperating with Satan’s subtle spirit to rob them of their own miracles and faith in Christ. It is not like the Pharisees and Sadducees do not need any healing themselves; however they allowed Satan to rob them of their own healings and testimonies by doing the devil’s work in tempting Christ at different occasions. “The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”” Mt 19:3 NKJV
Christ Clarifications on Marriage and Divorce
Christ saw through the religious leaders plan to test him and also to cause confusion to the multitudes following him, therefore he decided to clarify the issue to help and save the ignorant. Mt 9:4-9.
– God’s purpose for giving the Law was to protect lives and marriages. “Didn’t the LORD make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.” Mal 2:15 NLT
– God allowed Moses to give permission for men to divorce their wives in order to protect the lives of women (wives) from violent and abusive relationships. The reverse also applies if it is the man suffering the abuse.
– The divorce permission is a permissive will, as it negates God’s original plan for marriage. “For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence,” Says the Lord of hosts. “Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”” Mal 2:16 NKJV
Our God is a loving God, and He does not want any of His children (male or female) to suffer endlessly in any physically or emotionally abusive marriage. In a home where there is no peace or joy, Christ is absent from there. Where there is domestic abuse and violence – anger, bitterness, hatred and regrets will be the daily experience. Though it is the permissive will of God concerning divorce, the brother or sister may separate self in such circumstances. God has called us to peace. 1 Cor. 7:15.
Prayer
1. Every plan of Satan against my marriage, scatter.
2. O God my Father, heal every wound in home and marriage.
3. My Father my God, let my marriage glorify you, in the name of Jesus.
