Children Are God’s Heritage (2)

“As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.” Ps 127:4

Children as arrows in the hands of their parents must be prepared well and fired at the right direction to hit the target. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Pro 22:6. For a child to fulfill his or her destiny, both the father and mother must train the child. This is not limited to secular education or training, but spiritually also. The child must be trained very early to know God. “You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Det 11:19 NKJV 

Esau and Jacob
“When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau; but Rebekah loved Jacob.” Gen 25:27-28 BSB. Consider these two children, who are arrows in the hand of a mighty or an immature man. Parents are to love their children equally. If as a parent you love one child more than the other, do not show it.
– Isaac loved Esau because he was eating his pepper soup.
– Rebecca loved Jacob because he was always in the house, and therefore available to run errands.
– Each parent loved a child for their own selfish reasons.
– This created competition and conflicts between the children.
– We can assume that Jacob had access to good foods from his mother’s kitchen, while Esau eats whatever he could find.
– No wonder Esau despised his birthright and exchanged it for food.

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Eph 6:4 NASB. We are to raise our children well because they are created for the glory of God, Isa 43:7. “…so are children of the youth.” Ps 127.4. The best time to train our children is when we are still young and strong, and the children are equally still young. To try to do this at a later age is very difficult. Now is the time to prepare and direct well those arrows that God has placed in our hands.

Prayer
1. Help me O God to raise godly children for you.
2. Every agenda of Satan against my children, scatter.
3. O God my Father, the arrows you have placed in my hands, they shall not become thorns, in the name of Jesus.
